Healthline Body maps
Type of Resource: Website
Why it is useful:
This is a phenomenal resource and it can be used at all grade levels to give students a realistic view of the body. This program allows you to uncover the human body layer by layer so that students are able to understand not only the complexity of the body, but how different human systems connect. You can start at the skin, then uncover to show superficial muscle, deeper muscles, vessels, bones etc. You may also chose a male or female body, a general area (eg. chest, leg) or a specific area (eg. ear, kidney). You may also spin the model around 360 degrees at any time to see from different angles. Another important feature is that if you click on a structures (eg. bronchi, see image below) it tells you a brief description. There is also a longer and more detailed description of the structures in the chosen area at the bottom of the Healthline Body Maps page which allows students to further their learning.
Note: Could be specifically used in Bio 20 - Unit D or Bio 30, Unit A

How it may be implemented in the classroom:
This may be used in the classroom while giving a lecture so that students are able to visualize the body parts that they are being taught about. You may also use this site to allow students to do discovery learning if they are given the website during a class time period in the computer lab. This way, all students would be able to read and learn at their own pace and perhaps fill in a worksheet about the specific area of the body that you are teaching them, based on the grade level curriculum, or have the freedom to learn about areas of the body they find most interesting. They may then use you to ask further questions and help to guide their knowledge.
